📜 Where the Word “Religion” Really Comes From
The English word religion finds its roots in the Latin word religio, which scholars connect to two possible origins:
🔹 Religare — “To Bind, Tie, or Fasten”
- Derived from re- (again) and ligare (to bind).
- Meaning: “to bind again” or “to reconnect.”
- In ancient times, this referred to binding oneself to the gods through vows and rituals.
- Over time, it evolved to mean being bound to a system of duty, laws, and traditions.
🔹 Relegere — “To Observe Carefully”
- Derived from re- (again) and legere (to read or choose).
- Roman philosopher Cicero saw it as careful observance of rituals or sacred duties.
- It represented discipline and reverence — but also structure and control.
Both meanings point to one reality: religion was about binding — not freeing.
